NEW CASTLE, Del. - Students from four area high schools came to the Delaware National Guard's River Road Training site today for Recruiting Command's annual open house.
The students from St. Georges Technical High, Mount Pleasant High, Glasgow High and Christiana High participated in a day of round robin events designed to give them a taste of some of the many things they could do as Delaware Guardsman.
At the baffle range the students and teachers got a chance to fire the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) utilizing the Laser Collective Combat Advanced Training System (LCCATS), a weapon skills trainer that allows target practice using real weapons firing blank rounds. They also got a chance to fire the M16A2 and M4 carbine on the Engagement Skills Trainer with coach from the Marksmanship Training Unit.
In the Combined Service and Maintenance Shops the students were given the opportunity to get inside an M1117 Armored Security Vehicle and try on the body armor and personal equipment that is a standard load for a soldier in combat.
"This stuff is really heavy," said Kevin Fullmer, a junior at St. Georges "I had no idea it weighed so much."
At the grenade practice range the students took turns throwing M69 Training Grenades, with those who got closest to the target being give the chance to go up against members of the recruiting team.
Members of DENG's food service corps set up a Mobile Kitchen Trailer near the EST building giving the students a chance to eat real Army Field chow for lunch.
Maribeth Miller, the school's nurse at St. Georges and a first time chaperone to the event spoke of the value she saw in her students' attendance. "This is an amazing opportunity for the kids. They get to see and do things that they never would otherwise have gotten to do!"
"I had a lot of fun," said Klayten Visser, a St. Georges junior who was making her first visit "especially throwing the grenades!"
